HARPY Speech System
The first system capable of transcribing continuous speech using a large vocabulary.
Why It Was Important
Developed at Carnegie Mellon under DARPA funding, HARPY could recognize a 1,000-word vocabulary comprising continuous sentences. It achieved this by compiling syntax, acoustics, and vocabulary into a massive single network graph and using a 'beam search' algorithm to find the most probable spoken phrase.
