The Turing Test
A benchmark for machine intelligence based on conversational indistinguishability from humans.
In Plain Language
You type messages to two hidden players. One is a person and one is a computer, and you cannot see either of them. You can ask anything you like. If you cannot tell which is which, the computer passed. Turing thought that was a fairer question to ask than whether a machine really thinks.
Turing wanted to replace an argument he thought was going nowhere — "can machines think?" — with something you could actually run. A judge holds a text conversation with two unseen participants, one human and one machine, and tries to work out which is which. If the judge does no better than guessing, the machine passes. The point is not that conversation is the essence of intelligence; it is that the test sidesteps questions about consciousness entirely and asks only about observable behaviour. That move is why it endured, and also why it draws criticism: a system can be very good at seeming human without understanding anything — precisely what ELIZA demonstrated sixteen years later.
Why It Was Important
Published as 'The Imitation Game' in Turing's paper 'Computing Machinery and Intelligence', it posited that if a human judge cannot reliably tell the difference between a machine and a human through text conversation, the machine can be considered 'thinking'. It framed the ultimate goals of artificial intelligence for decades.
