Humanoid robots run 100m below the human world record at the Beijing games
At the second World Humanoid Robot Games, held at Beijing's National Speed Skating Oval from 22 to 26 August 2026, the Tiangong Ultra robot built by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Centre lowered its 100-metre time repeatedly across the event. After an opening mark of 9.39 seconds it ran 8.86 seconds on 25 August and won the large-size 100-metre final in 8.64 seconds on 26 August, the closing day. Usain Bolt's human world record, set in 2009, is 9.58 seconds. Honor's Lightning robot also finished under that mark. On the manipulation side of the programme, AGIBOT topped the overall medal table with 46 medals on its first appearance, taking gold in dexterous manipulation and in scenario-based events.
Why It Mattered
The sprint result is not a like-for-like athletic comparison — the machines are purpose-built, differently proportioned, and running under competition rules written for robots — and it should not be read as robots outrunning humans in any general sense. Its value as a historical marker lies elsewhere. Dynamic bipedal locomotion at this speed requires balance control, actuator power density, and thermal and structural tolerance that were not simultaneously available in fielded hardware a year earlier, and the year-over-year improvement across multiple independent Chinese teams indicates the gains came from platform maturation rather than a single lucky machine. The manipulation results matter more for deployment. Dexterous manipulation and scenario-based tasks — the events AGIBOT won — are the capabilities that determine whether humanoids do useful work in warehouses, factories and hospitals, and a competitive field in those categories is a better indicator of industrial readiness than any sprint time. The Games also function as a state-organised benchmark. China convened over five days a public, comparative evaluation of humanoid platforms at a scale and cadence no other country runs, producing standardised results across dozens of teams. That is a policy instrument as much as a sporting event: it sets shared task definitions, forces year-on-year improvement, and makes progress legible to investors and procurement bodies. Histories of embodied AI will likely use the 2025 and 2026 editions of these Games as the dated points where humanoid hardware moved from demonstration videos to measured, repeatable, publicly comparable performance.
