Contribution to AI
Nothing at Bell Labs was aimed at artificial intelligence, and yet the field would not have had a vocabulary without it. Claude Shannon's 1948 work gave communication a mathematics: a way to measure information in bits, independent of what the message meant or which medium carried it. Every later argument about compression, channel capacity, and what a model is really doing when it predicts the next token descends from that paper. Shannon also sketched a chess-playing scheme in 1950 that framed the problem as search over a tree of moves scored by an evaluation function, the shape almost every game-playing programme took for the next forty years. The transistor mattered differently. It made computation cheap enough to be worth wasting, which is the precondition for every brute-force method the field later leaned on. Bell Labs also supplied the institutional template: a corporate laboratory funded by a monopoly's revenues, insulated from product deadlines, where researchers largely chose their own problems. Xerox PARC, IBM Research and the industrial AI labs that came later all borrowed that arrangement, and the recurring worry about whether such places can survive without a monopoly behind them is a Bell Labs question first.
