Demis Hassabis steps back as Google DeepMind CEO
On 5 August 2026 Sundar Pichai told Google DeepMind staff that Demis Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and led it through the 2023 merger of DeepMind and Google Brain, would become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. Koray Kavukcuoglu, Google DeepMind's chief technology officer, assumed day-to-day operational control as senior vice president reporting directly to Pichai — a senior vice president role rather than the CEO title Hassabis held. Google said Hassabis and much of the unit's leadership would remain based in London and that Google DeepMind would retain separate leadership and research autonomy. Fortune reported on 10 August that the change followed a period of model delays, missed deadlines and staff attrition inside the unit.
Why It Mattered
Hassabis led the organisation responsible for AlphaGo, AlphaFold and the Gemini model family, and shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for protein structure prediction. His move out of the chief executive role closes the period in which the world's most decorated industrial AI laboratory was directed day to day by its founder. The structural detail matters more than the title: his successor takes an Alphabet senior vice president position reporting to Pichai rather than inheriting a CEO seat, which reduces the formal distance between the research unit and Alphabet's product organisation. That distance was the substance of the 2014 acquisition terms and of the 2023 consolidation, and it is the mechanism through which DeepMind protected long-horizon research programmes against product deadlines. Whether the stated research autonomy survives without a founder-CEO to defend it is the question a later account of this decade will test. Read together with Jeff Dean's departure the same week, the change also marks the end of the leadership generation that built Google's two original AI research organisations, at a moment when the company's competitive position depends on shipping frontier models on a product cadence. Historians of the field will likely treat early August 2026 as the point at which Google's AI research function was absorbed into ordinary corporate structure.
