Jeff Dean leaves Google to co-found Discovery Loop
On 5 August 2026 Jeff Dean announced he was leaving Google after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, a startup applying AI to automate scientific and engineering research. He departs with three long-serving Google researchers: Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals. The company is structured as an independent public benefit corporation, with Google as an investor and cloud partner. The announcement came the same day Alphabet disclosed that Demis Hassabis would move from Google DeepMind CEO to Chair, and Bloomberg reported the exit on 6 August.
Why It Mattered
Dean's tenure spans nearly the whole of Google's technical history: he was central to the distributed systems work that made web-scale computing routine, co-founded the Google Brain team that carried deep learning into industrial practice, and held the chief scientist role covering Google's AI research. Ghemawat was his collaborator on that infrastructure lineage; Le and Vinyals are among the most cited researchers in modern sequence modelling and reinforcement learning. Four departures of this weight from one organisation in a single announcement is a structural event, not a personnel note. Two things make it likely to appear in a later history. First, it continues the pattern of senior researchers leaving large labs to found independent entities, a pattern that has already produced Anthropic, Safe Superintelligence, Thinking Machines and World Labs, and that has repeatedly redistributed research direction away from incumbents. Second, the stated purpose — automating the research process itself rather than building a general assistant — places the new company in the AI-for-science segment that has become the most defensible claim for AI's long-run value, and it is being attempted by people who built the infrastructure such systems require. The public benefit corporation structure and Google's position as investor and cloud partner are the kind of hybrid arrangement that will be examined closely if the venture succeeds, since it keeps Alphabet exposed to the upside while placing the work outside its control.
